Bourbon Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe
Photo: Uncut Recipes

A whimsical bakery tucked in the corner of a vibrant city street, loved by locals for its fusion of traditional recipes with a modern spin, is the star of our tale today. The gifted bakers loved pushing the boundaries of taste, texture, and tradition, always seeking the perfect balance between the familiar and the unexpected. One day, the head baker, an adventurous soul named Leo, decided to experiment with a classic cream cheese frosting recipe.

The usual suspects were gathered - cream cheese, butter, and confectioners' sugar, each bringing its unique charm to this party of flavors. But Leo wanted to add a daring twist, something to dance on the taste buds of the adventurous locals who flocked to their bakery.

Bourbon was his answer. The dark, rich liquid held stories of the deep South, of relaxed afternoons on sunny porches, and brought with it a deep, sweet, and smoky flavor. It was the missing ingredient that would transform the classic frosting into a bold, captivating delight.

With the precision of a craftsman, Leo softened the butter and cream cheese, beating them into a smooth mixture. The sugar was added gradually, ensuring a well-integrated sweetness that wouldn't overpower the other elements. And then, the star of the show - the Bourbon - was poured in.

The entire bakery was filled with an intoxicating aroma as Leo mixed in the Bourbon, watching as the frosting transformed into a velvety, creamy masterpiece. After a taste test that had him beaming with pride, the Bourbon Cream Cheese Frosting was ready.

And the townsfolk loved it! The exciting, bold twist on the familiar classic was an instant hit, with locals and visitors alike lining up to taste the bakery's newest creation. Each spoonful was a perfect blend of traditional comfort and modern innovation, a testament to the endless possibilities of culinary creativity.

INGREDIENTS:

Butter: Go for unsalted butter as this allows you to control the amount of salt in the recipe. The butter should be high-quality as it significantly affects the taste and texture of the frosting. Look for butter with a high fat content (around 82%) for the best results. The butter should be at room temperature before you begin to facilitate easy mixing.

Cream Cheese: it's essential to choose a good quality one. Full-fat cream cheese is preferred for a richer and creamier frosting. Avoid using spreadable or low-fat versions as they can alter the consistency and flavor of your frosting. It's also better to use cream cheese that's at room temperature, to ensure it combines well with the other ingredients.

Confectioners' Sugar: Also known as powdered sugar or icing sugar, this type of sugar is essential for giving the frosting its smooth texture. It also adds sweetness. When choosing confectioners' sugar, make sure it's pure and doesn't contain any additional ingredients, such as cornstarch, which can be found in some brands. If you don't have confectioners' sugar on hand, you can make your own by grinding granulated sugar in a blender until it becomes a fine powder.

Bourbon: The quality of the bourbon can make a big difference to the flavor of the frosting. Choose a premium bourbon that you enjoy drinking, as the flavor will come through in the frosting. Remember that the alcohol in the bourbon will not entirely cook off, so consider this when serving to children or anyone who's avoiding alcohol. If you'd prefer not to use bourbon, you can substitute it with a non-alcoholic option like apple juice or a splash of non-alcoholic vanilla extract.

MAIN STEPS:

Temperature: Ensuring your butter and cream cheese are at room temperature is crucial. This is because cold ingredients don't blend together as smoothly, leading to a lumpy and uneven frosting.

Blending: The blending step is where you need to exercise both patience and care. Blend your butter and cream cheese until they've fully combined into a smooth and creamy mix. Rushing this step could result in a gritty texture rather than the silky frosting you're aiming for.

Adding Sugar: It's important to introduce the confectioners' sugar gradually, rather than all at once. This helps to avoid a dust cloud of sugar and ensures a smoother, well-incorporated frosting. Carefully blend in each addition of sugar before adding the next.

Bourbon Addition: When it's time to add the bourbon, do so with care. Pouring too quickly might cause the mixture to split. Always remember, quality matters: a better bourbon will provide a more superior flavor.

Mixing: As the frosting comes together, the consistency is key. Keep the mixer running until your frosting is smooth and spreadable, but be cautious not to overmix, as this could introduce too much air, making the frosting too light and less stable for spreading.

Taste and Adjust: Once you've finished mixing, don't skip the all-important tasting step. It's your chance to tweak the frosting to your liking. If it's too thick, a bit more bourbon or milk can help. If it's too thin or not sweet enough, more sugar may be needed.

SERVED WITH:

Dessert: Best Moist Carrot Cake Ever (USA): A moist, sweet, and slightly spicy cake that's filled with grated carrots and walnuts or pecans. This dessert is a classic American treat, often served at parties or special occasions. The sweet and tangy Bourbon Cream Cheese Frosting balances the cake's rich flavors and adds a touch of elegance.

Dessert: Red Velvet Cake (USA): This is a traditional southern American dessert. It's a light chocolate cake, known for its striking red color and velvety texture. The Bourbon Cream Cheese Frosting adds a sophisticated twist to this southern classic.

Dessert: Apple Spice Cake (Germany): A warm, moist cake loaded with flavorful spices and tart apples. This German dessert, paired with the bourbon cream cheese frosting, makes a perfect combo for fall or winter seasons.

Starter: Savory Pumpkin Bread (Italy): A bread made from pumpkin puree and savory herbs. This Italian bread works surprisingly well with the sweet and tangy Bourbon Cream Cheese Frosting as a starter.

Side Dish: Sweet Potato Biscuits (USA): These are biscuits made from sweet potatoes, which give them a unique sweet flavor and moist texture. Originating from the southern United States, these biscuits paired with Bourbon Cream Cheese Frosting make for a sweet and savory treat.

Dessert: Banana Cupcakes (Australia): These are moist cupcakes made from ripe bananas. They are a common dessert in Australia. The addition of Bourbon Cream Cheese Frosting elevates this simple dessert into a gourmet delight.

Drink: Espresso Martini (UK): This is a cocktail made from vodka, coffee liqueur, and freshly brewed espresso. This British drink may not seem like a typical pairing for a frosting, but the strong, bitter coffee flavor contrasts wonderfully with the sweet and tangy Bourbon Cream Cheese Frosting, making it a fantastic choice for a dessert cocktail.

ALTERNATIVES:

Dessert: Spiced Rum Cream Cheese Frosting (Jamaica): Taking inspiration from Jamaica's love for rum, this frosting incorporates spiced rum for an exotic, Caribbean twist. The spice from the rum pairs beautifully with the creaminess of the cheese, making it a unique yet delicious alternative to the bourbon frosting.

Dessert: Maple Cream Cheese Frosting (Canada): In Canada, maple syrup is a popular sweetener with a distinct, rich flavor. In this frosting, traditional confectioners' sugar is replaced with maple syrup, giving a sweet and slightly smoky taste that works well with many desserts.

Dessert: Orange Liqueur Cream Cheese Frosting (France): In France, orange liqueur is commonly used in desserts. This frosting utilizes the fruity, slightly bitter flavor of orange liqueur, giving the frosting a fresh and zesty flavor profile that pairs well with chocolate or citrus-based desserts.

Dessert: Matcha Cream Cheese Frosting (Japan): Matcha, a type of finely ground green tea powder, is a staple ingredient in Japan. Its earthy and slightly bitter taste provides a unique counterpoint to the sweetness of the frosting, and its vibrant green color makes for an impressive presentation.

Dessert: Honey and Lemon Cream Cheese Frosting (Greece): Inspired by the Greek love for honey and citrus, this frosting replaces part of the sugar with honey and adds a splash of lemon juice. This results in a tangy, sweet, and floral frosting that works wonderfully with light, spring-inspired cakes and pastries.

Dessert: Amaretto Cream Cheese Frosting (Italy): Amaretto, an Italian almond-flavored liqueur, brings a sweet, nutty twist to this cream cheese frosting. The hint of almond flavor from the amaretto pairs beautifully with the rich cream cheese, making it a delightful addition to any dessert.

Dessert: Coffee Cream Cheese Frosting (Brazil): Known for its coffee production, Brazil inspires this delicious alternative. This frosting infuses the rich, aromatic flavors of brewed coffee, offering a delightful contrast to the cream cheese's tangy taste. It's an excellent choice for topping off chocolate cakes or coffee-infused desserts.

HISTORY:

Cream Cheese Frosting's history is entwined with the invention of cream cheese itself. As we know, cream cheese was a happy invention by the American dairyman William Lawrence in 1872. Fast forward to the mid-20th century, cream cheese frosting became a star with the surge in popularity of carrot cakes and other sweet treats, thanks to its perfect balance of tanginess and sweetness.

But what about the Bourbon element? The origins of Bourbon stretch back to the 18th century in the Southern United States. The use of Bourbon in desserts, however, is a relatively recent innovation, with chefs and bakers continuously seeking new ways to enhance and add complexity to their creations.

The birth of Bourbon Cream Cheese Frosting is difficult to trace to one specific creator or time. Yet, it's safe to say that it likely emerged from the spirit of culinary experimentation and fusion, where traditional ingredients meet contemporary tweaks. What could be more thrilling than adding a splash of Bourbon to a classic frosting, infusing it with an exciting twist of deep, caramel-like notes?

Bourbon Cream Cheese Frosting has undoubtedly grown in popularity over recent years, fueled by the global foodie culture's penchant for unique and bold flavors. Food blogs, Instagram posts, and Pinterest boards are adorned with photos of cakes and cupcakes topped with this rich, creamy frosting, enticing millions to try out the recipe.

Culturally, this frosting represents a beautiful fusion of iconic American elements: the comforting creaminess of cream cheese frosting, and the bold, deep flavors of Bourbon whiskey. It's more than just a frosting; it's a symbol of culinary creativity and the spirit of gastronomic exploration.

As we journey forward in the world of baking and dessert creation, the Bourbon Cream Cheese Frosting holds a bright future. Its intriguing blend of flavors and the joy of surprise it brings to traditional desserts ensures it will continue to be a favorite among culinary adventurers worldwide.

TIPS:

Room Temperature Ingredients: This is crucial in achieving a smooth texture. Using cream cheese and butter directly from the fridge could lead to a lumpy mixture. Try to keep your ingredients out of the fridge for about an hour before you begin.

The Right Bourbon: When it comes to adding bourbon, go for quality. The taste of your bourbon will directly impact the flavor of your frosting. Opt for a good quality bourbon that you enjoy drinking. Different bourbons will impart different flavors. Don't hesitate to experiment with different brands to find your favorite.

Bourbon Infused Sugar: For a deeper bourbon flavor, consider infusing your confectioners' sugar with bourbon. This can be done by mixing a tablespoon of bourbon with the sugar and letting it sit for a few hours or overnight before using it in your frosting.

Brown Butter: Try browning the butter before using it in the frosting. Browned butter has a nutty, caramel-like flavor that can add an additional layer of depth to your frosting.

Frosting Pipeability: To make your frosting more pipeable, chill it in the fridge for 20-30 minutes. This makes the frosting firmer and it'll hold its shape better when piped on cupcakes or cakes.

Caramelized Sugar: Caramelizing a portion of the confectioner's sugar before adding it can add a smoky, caramel flavor that complements the bourbon and cream cheese beautifully.

Try Different Cheeses: Consider swapping a portion of the cream cheese with mascarpone or ricotta for a slight variation in flavor and texture.

Salted Bourbon: Add a touch of salt to your bourbon before adding it into the mix. Salt is a flavor enhancer and can help to bring out the deeper notes in the bourbon.

Pairing with Spice: Spices like nutmeg, clove, and cinnamon can pair wonderfully with bourbon. Experiment by adding a pinch of one of these spices to your frosting.

Experiment with Sweetness: Consider replacing a portion of the confectioner's sugar with a sweet syrup like maple or honey for a unique twist on the sweetness.

Bourbon Soaked Add-ins: For a texture contrast, consider adding some bourbon-soaked raisins or nuts into your frosting. Soak them overnight, then strain and fold into your finished frosting.

03 - Once the Butter and Cream Cheese mixture looks silky smooth, it's time to introduce the Confectioners' Sugar. Do this gently by adding the Sugar bit by bit, perhaps a third (or less) each time, followed by thorough blending after each addition.

04 - After the Sugar is nicely integrated, it's Bourbon time. Pour in your chosen high-quality Bourbon.

05 - Keep the mixer going. As you mix, the Bourbon and Sugar will bond with the Butter and Cream Cheese, gradually transforming into a delicious Frosting. Persist until the Frosting looks smooth and has the consistency you can easily spread.

Notes:

Gradual sugar addition: In step 3, when you're gradually adding the confectioners' sugar, ensure you give the mixture enough time to absorb each portion of sugar before adding the next. This is crucial to avoid lumps and achieve a smooth frosting.

Consistency Check: During step 5, be sure to consistently check the texture of your frosting. It should be smooth and easily spreadable but also hold its shape well. If it's too runny, you might need to add more confectioners' sugar, a tablespoon at a time. If you want a stronger bourbon flavor, don't hesitate to add a splash more.

Storing the Frosting: If you're not using the frosting immediately, it can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Remember to bring it back to room temperature and give it a quick stir before using it to restore its spreadability.

The word 'exquisite' encapsulates my thoughts on this frosting perfectly. It brings a magical touch to any dessert it graces.

I paired this frosting with my pumpkin bundt cake, and the results were fantastic. I used half the suggested amount of bourbon, to harmonize with the sweetness of the powdered sugar. Despite leaving out the cream cheese, I achieved a ganache-like consistency which was perfect for my needs. Next time I am definitely going to include cream cheese and the full dose of bourbon. A must-try!

I used this frosting to dress a fresh banana cake for a family birthday party, and it was an absolute showstopper! Over time, the intensity of the bourbon reduces, so don't shy away from using the entire portion. This recipe is definitely a keeper!

I substituted the bourbon with Crown Royal, and the frosting turned out fantastic. It had a perfect balance of flavors, not overpowering at all.
