Japanese Temaki Sushi ( 手巻き寿司 ) Recipe

TRADITIONAL JAPANESE RECIPE: When a Japanese person hears 'sushi', they first think of the most traditional form of sushi called Nigiri. This type of sushi is a tricky one, so they say. It takes years and years of practice, and a great mentor.

 

To me, when I think about it, I can only say with all honesty 'what a waste of time'... and I start making Temaki Sushi.

 

Temaki Sushi ( hand roll ) is basically a lazy version of Nigiri. Basically, it's my sushi. LOL

 

Temaki Sushi recipe is actually pretty simple. It can be made in a few steps, rather than years. It’s made of a rolled cone of seaweed, wrapped around rice and fillings. You can also serve all the ingredients and let your guests make their own Temaki. I usually do it, cuz I'm super lazy. At the table, each person makes own hand roll sushi based on their preference... making this temaki sushi recipe pretty useless.

 

Obviously, to make this recipe you'll have to buy Japanese Sushi Rice, which is steamed rice seasoned with rice vinegar, sugar and salt, and you'll only make this rice when you make sushi.

    200gr Cooked Sushi Rice
    ( Vinegared Rice for Sushi )

    2 Sheet of Nori
    ( Seaweed Sheet )



    For Fillings:

    Sashimi Grade Fish of Your Choice
    ( Salmon, Tuna, Salmon Roe, Spicy Tuna etc... )

     

    Cucumber

     

    Shiso Leaves
    ( Perilla )

     

    Radish Sprouts

     

    Takuan ( Japanese Pickled Daikon - Radish ), Avocado, Carrot, Sesame Seeds etc...




  • Imperial:

     

     

     

    7oz Cooked Sushi Rice
    ( Vinegared Rice for Sushi )

     

    2 Sheet of Nori
    ( Seaweed Sheet )

     

     

     

    For Fillings:

     

    Sashimi Grade Fish of Your Choice
    ( Salmon, Tuna, Salmon Roe, Spicy Tuna etc... )

     

    Cucumber

     

    Shiso Leaves
    ( Perilla )

Directions:


 

01 - If your Raw Fish comes as a block, slice the Raw Fish into long sticks.
You can ask a fish monger at a Japanese grocery store to cut the Raw Fish for Temaki Sushi. They will cut the Fish into long sticks, instead of Sashimi-Style cut.

 

02 - Cut the Nori sheets in half.

 

03 - Before you start, make sure your hands are dry in order to keep the Nori dry and crispy.

 

04 - Place the Nori Seaweed on the palm of your hand (shiny side down) and put a thin layer of Rice on left third of Nori.

 

05 - Place fillings ( Shiso Leaf, Cucumber, Raw Fish and Daikon Radish Sprouts ) vertically across middle of the Rice.

 

06 - Fold the bottom left corner of the Nori over and begin folding into a cone shape.

07 - Keep rolling until cone is formed.

 

08 - Put a piece of Rice at the bottom right corner to use as glue and close tightly. Continue with the other half of the Nori.

 

09 - Serve with Pickled Ginger, Wasabi, and Soy Sauce as condiments.
