Japanese Okonomiyaki ( お好み焼き ) Recipe

TRADITIONAL JAPANESE RECIPE: What is Okonomiyaki? (お好み焼き) It's a traditional Japanese food that is sometimes called Japanese Pancake or Japanese Pizza. It's a savory dish that is a bit more like an omelette or frittata than a pancake and it's made with okonomiyaki flour, eggs, cabbage, pork (bacon), shrimp or other seafood, and topped with a variety of condiments like sweet sauce (Okonomi Sauce), mayonnaise, dried seaweed and dried fish flakes.

Now... that may not sound very appetizing, but it turns out to be an INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS dish - crispy on the outside and soft inside. What could be better than Japanese food plus Bacon? If you have a passion for food, you absolutely must try Okonomiyaki!

Ingredients:

  • Metric:

     

     

     

    1 Head Cabbage
    ( cored and sliced )

     

    375gr All-Purpose Flour

     

    300ml Water

     

    4 Eggs

     

    30gr Red Ginger
    ( sliced )

     

    Okonomiyaki Sauce

     

     

     

    Optional:

     

    Mayonnaise

     

    Aonori
    ( Seeweed )




  • Imperial:

     

     

     

    1 Head Cabbage
    ( cored and sliced )

     

    13.2oz All-Purpose Flour

     

    10.5oz Water

     

    4 Eggs

     

    1oz Red Ginger
    ( sliced )

     

    Okonomiyaki Sauce

     

     

     

    Optional:

     

    Mayonnaise

     

    Aonori
    ( Seeweed )




  • Cups:

     

     

     

    1 Head Cabbage
    ( cored and sliced )

     

    3 cups All-Purpose Flour

     

    1.33 cups Water

     

    4 Eggs

     

    2 tablespoons Red Ginger
    ( sliced )

     

    Okonomiyaki Sauce

     

     

     

    Optional:

     

    Mayonnaise

     

    Aonori
    ( Seeweed )




 

 

 

Directions:


 

01 - In a large bowl, stir together Water and Eggs.

 

02 - Gradually add in the Flour until well combined.

 

03 - Add the Cabbage and stir until evenly distributed in the Batter.

 

04 - Heat a pan over medium heat with a drop of Vegetable Oil.

 

05 - Pour a portion of the Batter into the center of the pan.

 

06 - Let the Japanese Pizza slowly spreading or use a spatula to shape it into a circle.

 

07 - Fry for about 4 minutes per side or until browned on both sides. Double check with a fork if the insie is cooked.

 

08 - Remove from the pan and drizzle with Okonomiyaki Sauce ( and Mayonnaise ).

 

09 - Top with Aonori and Red Ginger. Serve.
