TRADITIONAL JAPANESE RECIPE: Kayaku Gohan is seasoned steamed rice with meat and vegetables. It’s also called Gomoku Gohan ( 5 ingredients rice ). Kayaku Gohan is a very tasty rice dish with different ingredients in it.
“Gohan” means cooked rice. “Kayaku (加薬)” means adding good effects. The term comes from the Chinese Medicine, the combination of different herbal ingredients is the important formula for Chinese Medicine. Each ingredient supports and praises each other’s effect, and yes it is true and adoptable in the cooking terminology. Just like a Chinese Medicine doctor creates his combination in his formula, you are also free to make your own combination for Kayaku Gohan.
Depending on where you are/live in Japan, this dish might be called Takikomi Gohan ( 炊き込みご飯 ) or Gomoku Gohan (五目ご飯 – a 5-ingredient mixed rice, which is loosely translated because there are roughly five ingredients).
There is also a very similar dish called Maze Gohan (混ぜご飯). Unlike Kayaku Gohan where uncooked rice and other ingredients are cooked in the same pot, Maze Gohan is the cooked rice mixed with cooked and seasoned ingredients.
