TRADITIONAL BRITISH RECIPE: Have you ever wonder how much it takes to actually produce shortbread, when you are at the shop and read the price of your favourite shortbreads? Well, it takes 10 minutes and it costs about... next to nothing!

 

Oh Yes! Get angry!

But luckly... I have the recipe for you right here.

 

Again... I take no responsability over your deteriorating health after today... but if you make this recipe once a year... nothing will really happen.

 

You can twist the resipe and add chocolate chips worked into the dough.

 

 

 

History:

 

Shortbread originated in Scotland, with the first printed recipe, in 1736, from a Scotswoman named Mrs McLintock.

 

Shortbread resulted from medieval biscuit bread, which was a twice-baked, enriched bread roll dusted with sugar and spices and hardened into a hard, dry, sweetened biscuit called a rusk.

 

Eventually, yeast from the original rusk recipe was replaced by butter, which was becoming more of a staple in Britain and Ireland.

 

Although shortbread was prepared during much of the 12th century, the refinement of shortbread is credited to Mary, Queen of Scots in the 16th century. This type of shortbread was baked, cut into triangular wedges, and flavoured with caraway seeds.

 

Shortbread was expensive and reserved as a luxury for special occasions such as Christmas, Hogmanay (Scottish New Year’s Eve), and weddings.

 

In Shetland, it is traditional to break a decorated shortbread cake over the head of a new bride on the entrance of her new house.

Ingredients:





  Conversions


  • Metric:

     

     

     

    200gr Plain Flour

     

    100g Butter

    ( cubed )

     

    50g Caster Sugar




  • Imperial:

     

     

     

    7oz Plain Flour

     

    3.5oz Butter

    ( cubed )

     

    1.7oz Caster Sugar




  • Cups:

     

     

     

    Less than 2 cups Plain Flour

     

    0.5 cup Butter

    ( cubed )

     

    0.25 cup Caster Sugar




 

 

 

Directions:


 

01 - Sift Flour and Sugar into a bowl.

 

02 - Rub the Butter in until the whole mixture comes together.

 

03 - Press the mixture into a very thick sheet.

 

04 - Cut the shapes.

 

05 - Preheat the oven to 160 C/ 320F and bake the Shortbread for about 14 minutes or until pale golden. Serve hot or cold.

 

 

 

Notes:


 

- After direction 03, before baking, you can sprinkle some regular Sugar.
